Working in a team is inevitable in the workplace. What goes into making a cohesive team and effective team members? Lucky for you, becoming a team player is not an innate ability and it is something that you can develop along the way. Take a look at these attributes of an effective team player to learn how to become a better one.

1. Understand your role

An effective team player understands his/her role. If you have a clear understanding of the role you play in the team and your responsibilities, you are off to a great start in developing your team player skills.

2. Demonstrate accountability and reliability

Once you know your role and responsibilities, the next logical step is to be accountable for it. Demonstrating accountability and reliability means consistently following through with your commitments. If you do not meet your commitments, it negatively affects and adds a burden to the rest of the team.

3. Be flexible and adaptable team player

Conditions in the workplace change often. Being flexible and adaptable to changes that come along your way can make you an invaluable team member. Don’t complain or get negative about changes.

A flexible and adaptable team player also knows how to accept and consider different points of view. More so, effective team players often drive change within the team and lead them towards effectively managing the change.

4. Communicate appropriately

Effective team players know how to communicate with other teammates appropriately. They know how to listen to others and speak up when needed. They are engaged and do not sit silently during meetings. Learn to share information to help towards the team’s goals.

5. Be committed to the team’s goals

Effective team players care about their team and their team’s goals. They are committed to achieving their goals and putting in the needed work.

6. Respect your teammates

Consistently treats other team players with respect and consideration. Take note that when getting into a team in the workplace, you might not always like the person you’re working with.

An effective team player sets aside their personal feelings and emotions and doesn’t let that affect the team dynamics and the team’s efforts to meet the goals.
