1. API (Application Programming Interface)
API is a set of functions and procedures that allow the creation of applications which access the features or data of an operating system, or application.
2. Asynchronous learning
Asynchronous learning is self-paced learning wherein learners digest the content at their own time and pace and does not normally involve real time interaction between teachers and learners.
3. Blended Learning
Blended learning is a learning methodology that combines face-to-face learning and online learning.
4. CMS (Content Management System)
This eLearning platform is used to develop, modify, store, and manage information.
5. E-learning authoring tool
An e-learning authoring tool is a software that allows instructional designers to create e-learning courses and online training materials that can be easily uploaded to an LMS. These include capabilities for graphics, videos, and audio recordings.
6. Flipped classroom
A flipped classroom is an instructional design approach that involves self-guided activities and eLearning assessments that are then reinforced in the classroom. For example, a learner will take an e-learning course, then meet learners to discuss concerns and learnings from the e-learning course.
Gamification is the integration of gaming principles such as winning, levels, awards, scoring, etc. to learning content.
HTML5 stands for HyperText Markup Language, version 5. It uses semantic tags to describe eLearning content. It is what is now used in creating e-learning materials rather than Flash because Flash is not supported by smartphones and other mobile devices.
9. ILT (Instructor Led Training)
This is face-to-face learning done wither in a physical or virtual classroom. It is also considered synchronous learning.
10. Instructional Designer
An instructional designer creates the content, design, objectives, look and feel of the e-learning course. The instructional designer usually works with an SME in case he/she is not an expert at the topic of the course.
11. Learning Analytics
Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data accumulated during an online learning activity which allows for analysis of learner behaviors, competencies, and areas for improvement.
12. LMS (Learning Management System)
The LMS is the platform that allows for management, storing, reporting, and sharing of the e-learning course. Some LMS are installed or locally hosted, while others are cloud-based.
13. LRS (Learning Record System)
An LRS is a database that stores, manages and performs analysis on learning data which is most often a part of an LMS.
14. Micro Learning
Micro-learning involves learning in smaller steps and goes hand-in-hand with traditional e-learning. Micro-learning activities are usually short-term lessons, projects, or coursework that is designed to provide the student with ‘bits’ of information.
15. Mobile Learning
Also known as Mlearning, mobile learning refers to e-learning materials that can be accesses on a mobile device such as a smartphone or a tablet.
16. PLE (Personal Learning Environment)
PLE are systems that give learners the ability to take charge of their personal learning path and track their progress along the way. This typically involves goal setting, choosing the ideal eLearning activities, and deciding which eLearning content to access and in what order.
17. Rapid authoring tools
A rapid eLearning authoring tool gives eLearning professionals the power to create rapid eLearning materials.
18. SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model)
SCORM-compliant objects can be used across different elearning platforms. SCORM defines a specific way of constructing LMS’s and training content so that they work well with other SCORM conformant systems.
19. SME (Subject Matter Expert)
The SME is the person who is an expert at the content of the e-learning being developed. The SME usually works closely with the Instructional Designer to ensure that the content of the e-learning course is accurate and updated.
A storyboard is a detailed document that is created at the beginning of an e-learning project which details all eLearning course design elements including learning objectives, learning activities, and assessments.
21. Synchronous Learning
Synchronous learning is when all learners digest and take in the content all at the same time and involves real time interaction with teachers and learners.
22. Tin Can API
Tin Can is an open source API that adds some needed extra functionality to SCORM and lifts many restrictions of older specifications.
23. WBT (Web Based Training)
WBT are eLearning experiences that take place online or via private intranets.
24. VLE (Virtual Learning Environment)
A VLE is a web-based platform that grants instructors the power to immerse and engage their online learners.
